Texas gopher tortoise at Laguna Atacosa National Wildlife Refufe, Texas Texas Gopher Tortoises are a threatened species. While most turtles spend much of their time in water, tortoises live on land. The gopher tortoise eats a variety of vegetable matter, including the fruits of prickly pear cactus. A slow, but persistent digger, the tortoise resides in burrows that are often used by other animals and reptiles as well.
