American Plains Bison mother and calf nuzzling, South Dakota, Custer State Park. American Plains Bison were almost exterminated by unlimited hunting during the time when railroads first spanned the Great Plains. Some train travelers would shoot as many bison as possible from the moving railroad cars, making no attempt to gather or use the dead bison.
