Calling Roseate Spoonbill Adult and imature Roseate Spoonbill calling to flock. Common along the coasts of Florida, Texas and southwest Lousiana, Roseatte Spoonbills feed primarily by sweeping their bills from side to side through shallow waters. They prey on small fish, shrimp, crabs, mollusks, insects and slugs. During the nineteenth century, spoonbill feathers were used to decorate hats, and plume hunters dramatically reduced their numbers. Although they have successfully recolonized, they remain vulnerable to oil spills, habitat destruction and degradation.
