Playful, affectionate and intelligent, river otters are a delight to anyone lucky enough to observe them. Young otters love to bounce up streamside hills only to dive right back down mud or snow slides into the water. Primarily fish eaters, otters will sometimes fish together, herding schools of fish into coves where they can more easily be caught. Otters also catch and eat frogs, crustaceans and, occasionally turtles. River otters excavate burrows, digging from below water level up into the drier soil in the bank, or move into abandoned beaver lodges and hollow logs. They are found across nearly all of North America, and in the northern parts of Europe and Asia. Preferred habitats include rivers, lakes, streams, estuaries and many coastal environments. Otters are sensitive to changes in water quality and temperature, since watersheds degraded by deforestation, willow removal, overgrazed banks, erosion and channelization can rarely support the healthy fish populations that otters require.
