Pine Siskins love thistle seeds and will brave the spines of the thistle plant to rip apart its dried flowers. Siskins will also come to feeders for the seeds (marketed commercially as black niger seeds). During breeding season, male siskins are true Romeos, singing to females as they circle above them in a fan tailed display. Males also feed females as part of courtship. If the pairing is successful, the male siskin will feed the female on the nest until a few days after the eggs hatch. Born naked and blind, the young birds have brightly colored mouth linings that both parents target and attempt to fill with small insects. Although siskins normally feed in small groups during the breeding season, they forage in flocks during winter months, moving as a group from tree to tree. Flocks fly to the tops of trees and work their way down. Siskins are unpredictable in their wintering and breeding distributions, moving hundreds of miles from year to year as they follow temporary food abundance.
