Moose, with their broad muzzles and heavy manes, are the unmistakable giants of the deer family. Weighing up to 1500 pounds, male moose can be as tall as six feet at the shoulder. Their massive antlers can grow to lengths of six feet and weigh as much as fifty pounds. During breeding season, males may fight fiercely over females, but settle most disputes through minor tussles and bluff charges. Females normally give birth to one or two calves in the spring and will nurse their young for nine or ten months. Moose can eat up to sixty pounds of food in a day and can often be seen foraging in lakes during summer months. Strong swimmers, they can completely submerge themselves in their search for aquatic vegetation. In winter, moose eat the bark and twigs of trees and what vegetation they can find beneath the snow. They prefer moist, wooded areas and may use several home ranges during the year. Although moose have poor vision, they have acute senses of taste and smell.
