Harbor seals are widely distributed in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. They sleep, bask and nurse their young on rocky islets and isolated beaches. Despite the ability to travel great distances, most Harbor seals stay near their birthplace. Harbor Seals are strong swimmers with a high tolerance for carbon dioxide in their tissues and the ability to reduce their oxygen requirements by slowing their heart rate. This permits them to stay underwater for twenty minutes and dive to depths of 600 feet. Certain pods of Orca, great white sharks, grizzly bears and man are the adult harbor seal's only predators. Fishing in both fresh and ocean waters, harbor seals eat a variety of fish and shellfish and feed shrimp and other small prey items to their newly weaned pups. If disturbed by humans or dogs, mothers will temporarily leave their pup alone on the beach. The young should not be disturbed since the mothers usually watch from the water, returning to their young as soon as they feel secure.
