Canvasback ducks are easily identified by the unique ski jump profile of their head and beak alone. Canvasbacks nest in prairie potholes, a wetland habitat vastly reduced in recent years by draining for agriculture. Unlike the Mallard and other dabblers which can simply leap clear of the water, Canvasbacks must run across the water to take flight. Accomplished divers, Canvasbacks pluck vegetation from the bottom and surface to eat. In autumn, they migrate in large V shaped flocks to lakes and estuaries near the coast. Preferring deep open water, they form sociable groups called rafts. Male and female Canvasbacks form new pair bonds each year and the male follows the female to her place of birth where they breed. While the female incubates the eggs on a bulky nest which may sometimes float, the males gather in flocks and begin their feather molt. This is a vulnerable time because ducks molt all of their flight feathers at one time and lose their ability to fly until new flight feathers grow in.
