California sea lions are smaller than northern sea lions and darker in color. Males are seven feet long, weigh almost 600 pounds, and have a noticeable crest on their forehead. Females are six feet long, but weigh under 200 pounds. California sea lions spend much of their lives at sea, but return each year to rookeries off the coasts of California and Mexico. Females normally give birth to a single pup in May or June, four to five days after reaching land, and are ready to mate with a dominant bull three to four weeks later. When the breeding season concludes, males head to sea and may travel as far north as British Columbia. Sea lions eat squid, octopus, and a variety of fish, primarily herring, rockfish, and hake. Some, fish at the mouths rivers, for lamprey and salmon. They are intelligent and playful, adults chase and catch their own air bubbles underwater youngsters love to play in tidal pools. Though once widely hunted, they are now protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
